DolphinEnergy sees information
technology (IT) as anopportunity to
reduce energy consumptionwithin
the company and help reduce its
impact on the environment. Since
August 2010, DolphinEnergy has
developed a set of proactivemeasures
tooptimize IT systems energy
consumptiononone hand, but also
provide solutions for wider energy
savings across the company. These
measures havebeen
compiled into theDolphinEnergy
Green IT initiativewhich has been
included into the 2011 IT strategy as
a significant contribution toDolphin’s
successful sustainabledevelopment.
DolphinEnergy’sGreen IT initiative is
primarily looking tominimize energy
consumptionby IT systems
by rationalizing its IT equipment
following a strict refreshpolicy
(3 years) on standard configurations
with the highest green ratings.
Moreover, the number of IT systems is
drastically reducedby leveraging
consolidation and virtualizationbest
practiceswherever possible (network,
servers, applications and
printers). DolphinEnergy is also
implementing various solutions such
as energy-use optimizationon
companyPCs, automatic shutdowns
of companyPCs at night, and
optimized computing-energy factors in
company data centers.
The second strategicdriver for Dolphin
Energy’sGreen IT initiative consists
in theprovisionof solutions to
minimize the company’s environmental
impact. Promoting and extending
online collaboration solutions and
video conferencing systems helps
minimize travel and transportation
requirements between thedifferent
company sites in theUAE and
Qatar. Deploying a company-wide
print services infrastructure (which
is currently operational in theUAE
and under development inQatar)
significantly reduces thepaper and
toner consumption throughgreen
policies enforcement (double-sided
andblack andwhiteprinting). Finally,
DolphinEnergy IT is enforcing
recycling (ie. spares, paper, toners,
etc.) anddonationof used equipments
(ie. computers, printers,, etc.) to
employees or charity and educational
organizationswherepossible. The
server consolidation and virtualization
project and themanagedprint service
project are scheduled inQatar during
the second half of 2011.
